In 1971, Malcolm's journey began as a Sales and Hire Representative for mobile scaffolding. By 1978, Access Rental Ltd was founded in partnership, specialising in hiring mobile scaffolding and powered work platforms. The company supplied equipment to over ten major films, including three Star Wars productions, and expanded to five depots before he sold the business to a fully listed PLC, and in turn, earning a seat on the main board.
In 1990, Malcolm formed Myrefield Group Ltd, comprising of three companies producing specialist concrete products. The following year, Malcolm returned to the powered access industry and created AFI Aerial Platforms Ltd (now AFI Uplift). In 1995, Malcolm spearheaded the dynamic initiative of forming The Access Link, an alliance of 24 access companies offering national coverage. By 1998, AFI had grown significantly, with a nationwide presence and a £20 million turnover.
In 2005, after selling AFI, Lifterz Ltd was founded and scaled to five depots, 109 employees, and £16 million in annual sales. In 2019, the company was sold to Speedy Hire PLC for £21.5 million, where an advisory role was retained post-sale.
